Offbeat Haines Tour

Tour Departs from Skagway, Alaska

Escape the crowds of Skagway and head to Haines, Alaska to experience an authentic Alaskan town. While Haines is located a mere fifteen miles from Skagway, there is no direct road connection and very few cruise ships dock there. This gives Haines a friendly and “off-the-beaten track” feel. This small group tour takes you to three of Haines’ most unusual and out-of-the-way attractions- the Hammer Museum, Extreme Dreams Art Studio, and Chilkat State Park.

The trip begins with a 45-minute catamaran ferry ride along the steep-walled fjord  connecting Skagway to Haines. Your guide will acquaint you with the natural history of Lynn Canal as you look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles.

hammerhighlights-1Arrive in Haines and start with a visit to the Hammer Museum for a guided tour. Meet the curator and find out why this small, remote town is home for this quirky museum dedicated to man’s first tool. The museum spans history from the Egyptian pyramids to the Space Age. There is something for everyone and you’ll be sure to leave with a smile on your face.

Next, head out of town for a ten-mile scenic drive along the Chilkat River. The beauty is inspirational- no wonder a recent study found that Haines has highest percentage of professional artists anywhere in the rural USA.Extreme Dreams Art Studio- Haines Off the Beaten Track

We pass the historic Letnikof Cove cannery and arrive at the Extreme Dreams Art Studio owned by John and Sharon Svenson.  John works in a variety of mediums including watercolor, woodcut prints, and glass. His wife, Sharon, is a lifelong Haines resident and talented weaver. Local art fills their handcrafted timber-frame gallery with unique and unusual creations.

We drop down to the ocean’s edge at Chilkat State Park. The road is bit bumpy so very few tourists venture here. But the view is worth it- dominated by a huge waterfall pouring out the face off the Rainbow Glacier and the snow-capped Chilkat Mountains. The tour includes a picnic lunch.

After lunch, return to Haines and head back to Skagway via catamaran.
