Ski down the face of an iceberg? Yes it is possible. I took this image on a camping/ski adventure in Kluane National Park in March 1990. This is the 30th anniversary of this adventure I shared with Thom Ely, of Haines and Mike Speaks, from Denali Park. We headed down the frozen Alsek River and skied to Lowell Lake, where icebergs from the Lowell Glacier had frozen in place. Curious, we climbed on to a few of the more stable-looking bergs. Thom found a spot on one of them where he was able to drop into a telemark turn (for those who don’t know, a telemark turn is a specialized type of skiing where the heel is not locked down. So the knee drops towards the ground when turning).

This image is part of a huge project I have embarked on. Remember the days of slides and slide shows? I am now reviewing over 14,000 of my slides that have been scanned and digitized. These images go back to 1985 and cover my travels to all seven continents. They also include my father’s slide collection with photos of his life in Guatemala and the USA. His photos date back to the 1950’s. I’ll periodically share some of the more interesting images with you.
